Being a practicing Muslim can be difficult in the 21st century because of all the temptations around us. Our attention and time is not always utilised wisely, and we grasp onto this Dunya even though we know it is temporary. We’ve been placed on this Dunya to fulfil a purpose, and this purpose is to worship Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Balancing our Deen with the Dunya is difficult and our time is limited as “every soul shall taste death”, so I’ll give a few suggestions on how we can utilise our time better!

I think that you should try and make it a habit to play the Qur’an (audio) in the car. The Qur’an is the greatest source of guidance for mankind – it educates, it empowers, it inspires. Small changes like listening to Qur’an in your car will keep you remembering the Creator. All Qur’an recitations are beautiful, but there are some Qaris (readers) who stand out from the rest. I personally find these Qaris very peaceful and easy to follow:

Shiekh Huzaify
Mishary Rashid Muhammad Alafasy
Sheikh Abu Bakr Al-shatri

The Qur’an lays down the core principles we need to follow if we are to succeed in both worlds. Aisha radi allahu anhu said that the conduct of the Prophet, peace be upon him, was entirely according to the Qur’an. We should make an effort to listen to the Qur’an more, recite it more and try to understand it. “so, when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and be silent that you may receive mercy”.

Secondly, we should study and follow the Sunnah. Many people follow the Sunnah without knowing why we do so. To truly appreciate and benefit from the Sunnah we should understand the reasons behind it. In Surah An-Nisa it is said:

“O who you believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger…”

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) life is the best example to follow.

“Say, [O Muhammad], If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Allah sent the messenger as a guide, therefore to gain that guidance we should follow the Sunnah.

My third suggestion is to spend your time wisely!! You could try to broaden your knowledge by reading some beneficial books. Here are three that I found really useful:

‘Dua Weapon of the Believers’ by Yasir Qadhi

All you need to know about Dua is in this book. This book illustrates the importance of Dua; it shows how Dua is a tool for success in this world and the hereafter.

‘Reclaim Your Heart’by Yasmin Mogahed

Described as a manual on how to protect your most prized possession, your heart. This book looks at love, pain, loss & happiness from a unique perspective. This book illustrates the journey of a heart and is very insightful!

‘Youth’s problems’by Sheikh Muhammad Saalih Al-Uthaymeen

It discusses problems facing the youth and how to overcome them in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

These books will increase your knowledge Imaan and self-love. You can always learn something new!

My final suggestion is that you should plan you day around your prayer. It is difficult praying 5 times a day due to a hectic schedule. Even though a busy life makes prayer harder, a prayer makes a busy life easier. Remembering Allah throughout the day does polish the heart and things that may seem difficult become easier.

Never get too busy making your life that you forget your afterlife. May Allah SWT guide us all to the righteous path and help us to better ourselves.
